The “Hobbit” series is one of the most famous movie series of all time. I hadn’t watched it until very recently and here’s what I liked about it. Overall the special effects and CGI was very well done, especially for its time. There were a few times it was rough, especially with the dragon, but I think they pulled it off very well. The acting was pretty well done as well. I was surprised at how many big celebrities they had in the movie, as well as their very own song written by the one and only Ed Sheeran. There are times where it’s a little too serious and it’s hard not to chuckle at the slow motion turns or long pauses between lines. But the actors do a very good job at selling their characters and making them seem real, as well as likable.

The story was very interesting as well, the basic idea of a dragon hoarding gold isn’t terribly original, but the many foils and twists they add and have make the movie stand out and make it unique in its own way. The villains are convincing and they do a good job of making them intimidating and realistic. They are called orcs and it clearly took a lot of makeup and costume design and probably CGI to pull it off, but they managed to do it. The other extremely impressive feat they managed to pull off was the massive battle scenes involving hundreds of people. The sheer amount of planning and coordination it takes to shoot a scene like that is immense, and they executed it nearly perfect.

The movie also has a really nice message of valuing home over gold, and they emphasize that over and over again throughout the movie. It’s actually kind of heartwarming and wholesome. The movie has its sad moments as well so it’s not just pure action.

“It’s one of the classics,” senior, Brynli Hales, said.

“Not as good as Lord of the Rings but still good,” senior, Peyton Kelly, said.

So if you haven’t seen it yet or want to rewatch it, I would definitely recommend doing so. You won’t be disappointed.
