Netflix’s latest limited series, “One Day,” arrived just in time for the Valentine’s season, premiering on February 8th, 2024. With 14 episodes ranging from 20 to 30 minutes each, it seemed daunting to finish the series in one sitting. However, my Friday afternoon turned into an emotional rollercoaster as I delved into the lives of the characters.
From the outset, “One Day” gripped me with its moving storytelling. What started as excitement quickly transformed into tears, leaving me emotionally invested. Personally, I rate the series a solid 10/10, and it seems I’m not alone in my assessment, given its impressive 8.2/10 IMDb rating and 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
One day starts off with the main characters meeting, Emma and Dexter. The first time I saw Dexter I screamed…a lot, and that did continue. They hit the night off and decided to hike to Arthurs seat on July 15th. While admiring the view Dexter explains the significance of July 15th, basically if it rains on that day it will rain for the rest of the summer. The episodes always take place on July 15th.
To me, Emma and Dexter’s love story resembles a teeter-totter, a delicate balance of emotions that constantly shifts throughout the series. Initially, Emma is firmly entrenched on one end, deeply enamored with Dexter. Meanwhile, Dexter’s attention switches between different girls. However, the dynamic changes when Emma goes on a date with Ian, causing Dexter to reassess his feelings and join her on the emotional seesaw. Subsequent events, such as Emma’s breakup with Ian and Dexter’s hasty marriage to Sylvie, continue to tilt the teeter-totter. As their lives unfold, with Emma finding success as an author in Paris and Dexter navigating the aftermath of divorce, the emotional pendulum swings once again. Yet, amidst the turbulence, a moment of equilibrium emerges when Emma chooses Dexter over Jean Paul, culminating in a harmonious and fulfilling relationship. Witnessing their lively relationship put tears in my eyes. Especially when Emma spends time with Jasmine and decides she wants a child of her own. However, just as stability seems within reach, tragedy strikes on the somber date of July 15th, marking Emma’s untimely demise.
The series deftly explores themes of love, loss, and resilience. Emma’s untimely death serves as a gut-wrenching reminder of life’s fragility. Each July 15th becomes a milestone, marked by both joy and sorrow. The intricacies of the characters’ lives leave a lasting impact, making Emma and Dexter’s story one that resonates deeply.
“One Day” is not just another romance series; it’s a masterful portrayal of the human experience. From its compelling narrative to its nuanced characters, the series deserves recognition and acclaim. As the credits rolled on the final episode, I found myself longing for more, a testament to its enduring impact.
