The Enthralling world of Wicked is something that has captivated audiences over the last 20 years. With a new film adaptation on the way, let’s educate ourselves on the timeline and intricacies of this inspiring tale.
The story of Wicked is inspired by the fantasy novel “The Wizard of Oz” written by L. Frank Baum. Through the course of the story the characters Glinda, the good witch, and the wicked witch of the west are introduced. These are the characters that will later be developed into our female leads in Wicked.
The Original Wicked Musical premiered in October of 2003 starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba, formerly known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Kristin Chenowith as Glinda the good witch. Far before Dorthy enters Oz the two meet as roommates in college and, through much turmoil, persevere and become friends. In the end, the two go their separate ways because they need different things out of life but still recognize the impact they’ve had on each other’s lives.
The new film adaptation of Wicked was announced in December of 2019 with singer songwriter Ariana Grande playing Glinda the Good witch and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Wicked will be released somewhat untraditionally. It will come out in two parts with the first being released to theaters November 22, 2024.
When asking students, Junior Amy Gurney said, “I’m excited for the new movie, but I’m a little skeptical because they are releasing it in two parts and possibly adding new songs.” While Junior Isaiah Holland expressed, he is, “excited to see Ariana Grande in a new light and character.”
The announcement and buildup of the Wicked series has reignited passion and excitement for fans everywhere. While many are critical of choices that could be made to alter the story, only time will tell how the public interprets this new installment to the Wicked world.
