It’s a Friday afternoon on November 21st 2024, your in class trying to find something to listen too and all of a sudden you see that Kendrick Lamar had just dropped a sixth full length album. Having been the artist of the summer known for his hit “Not like us” and also being a part of one of the biggest rap beefs in the history of the genre, you know that this album is a must listen.
Although in my personal opinion GNX is a sub par release from Kendrick Lamar it is still one of the best albums of the year and it has plenty of bangers. The first song on the album, Wacced out murals starts us of with a slow rhythmic rhyme session followed swiftly by my two favorite songs on the album, Squabble up and Luther. Squabble up being a banger with an amazing beat and lather a heart felt mover. The rest of the 12 track album seems to follow this pattern with notable songs such as TV Off and The heart part 6. The rest of the album is centered around Kendrick flaunting how he is number one and demanding his respect. For most of the runtime of this album he is borderline screaming at us. Desperately trying to get his message out not to contest him. This energy is infectious, It makes you want to be the greatest, even through the rough spots of the album.
Overall this album is great, but it’s not what We have come to expect from a Kendrick Lamar album. It doesn’t change narratives. It doesn’t speak on controversial topics. Its simply Kendricks way of telling the hip hop-sphere that he is the guy and he is here to stay. I would rate GNX by Kendrick Lamar a 7.5 out of ten
