Joji’s smithereens is a masterclass of r&b with trap fusion elements. This album takes us on a rollercoaster of joji’s emotional trauma and strife. Throwing us through loops of trap / hiphop music and soulful ambient piano tunes. For many reasons I have rated this album highly but the main reasons I want to talk about are the way it makes you feel and the storytelling on the project.
The first reason I wanted to write a review about this Album was how it made me feal. This project is always on my queue for late night drives and sad moments. Its soulful atmosphere and harmonious lyrics allow for a listen filled with somber or exhausted vibes. Although none of us like being sad, you can’t deny a good sad song and this album is filled with heart throbbers.
The second reason that I chose to review this album is because of the storytelling. Joji starts the album off on the piano sonnet Glimpse Of Us, and if I had to pick any song from this album to display his storytelling abilities it would be Glimpse Of Us for sure. This song is a powerful story about A man (Joji) losing his loved one and seeing them with another person while he was still not over it. A prompt that I’m sure a lot of us can relate too. And the song is so well written. It even charted #1 on its release as a single.
At the end of the day Jojis smithereens is a classic singer songwriter album that I will always go back too in my woes. I would recommend this album to anyone who is looking for a good versatile winter listen, or anyone who needs a heartfelt poem. I give Joji’s smithereens a B+ rating.
