When winter starts to roll around there are two main winter sports that people get excited about, skiing and snowboarding. There has always been a big debate on what one is better. And while both have the same concept and are both thrilling to do, they bring different experiences. Skiing involves two separate skis for each foot and moving your legs separately, while snowboarding involves one board that both feet are attached to. If you are someone that wants to start skiing or snowboarding but don’t know what one to pick, I am here to help. Lets see if snowboarding or skiing is better according to our fellow FHS students. Maybe their thoughts can help you decide what one is the right fit for you.
“I like skiing more because I can do more challenging off course runs and go down steeper terrain. I also like it because in my opinion it may be hard to get good at but skiing is easier to learn than snowboarding”. Junior, Molli Bell said
Being able to have control of both of your feet makes skiing easier to learn. It also makes harder terrain easier because you can move more of your body and adjust your legs how you need. However I think that as long as you are a really good skier or snowboarder, you can go on challenging courses.
“I like skiing better because I have been skiing my entire life and I can go on moguls which I love doing” Sophomore, Jace Richards
When you start something early on in your life, especially a sport like snowboarding or skiing, you like it more because that’s what you grew up doing, and there are many good memories attached to it. Also moguls are mounds that form on the snow on ski hills. It’s like the ungroomed part of the slopes and the terrain is harder. This is something that skiers can do but snowboarders can’t because skiers can glide around the mounds making perfect curves in the snow. However snowboarders can’t turn like that so they just glide over them. This makes moguls fun for skiers but an annoyance for snowboarders.
“I like snowboarding better because it was easier for me to learn because I have surfed behind a boat and they are very similar. And it’s a lot less gear to wear than skiers”. Junior, Resse Barton
That’s true! Snowboarding is very similar to surfing because you have two feet on the board and are moving your body to glide the board. So if you are a good surfer you would be an amazing skier. Snowboarding has less gear then skiing but the biggest difference in the gear is the boots. Snowboards wear basically just snow boots, but skiers have heavy boots that buckle all the way up. This makes snowboarding gear better.
I hope that hearing the students’ thoughts and mine, help you to decide which one you want to give a try!
