Tik Tok got “banned” on Saturday, Jan. 18th. There is a vast majority of the population that relies on Tik Tok for not only entertainment, but also inspiration, tutorials, tips, and much more. Tik Tok is one of the most popular social media platforms out there so we all have our different opinions of it. Some of us are completely for the ban and some of us think it’s unnecessary.
“I think that it’s a tremendous time wasting” – Coach/Teacher Mr. Jacobson
“I think it’s alright, that people can share videos and media, but do I think it can be addictive” – sophomore Mckenzie Hall
Tik Tok is no longer available on the app store. Meaning if you already have it, you can obviously continue using it. However, if you deleted it after the ban or never had it in the first place, it is far too late for you to download the app now. Almost everyone talks about how bad this ban is.
“I have friends who have tik tok, they just scroll” – Coach/Teacher Mr. Jacobson
However, on X (previously twitter) people have mentioned that without Tik Tok they have been sleeping on time and found other activities. This ban isn’t the greatest though. As mentioned before, many people rely on social media platforms like Tik Tok for uses besides entertainment.
“I think the ban is a little fishy, and it does make sense since it takes information, but I’m not sure” – sophomore Mckenzie Hall, said.
There is a stigma with social media, and rightfully so. Social media platforms have proven to be a cause for teenagers and adults depression. This is because of the comparison of ourselves to others online and the addicting content where we endlessly scroll.
“I think for teenagers I think it’s harmful for most cases, and for adults it’s not good either but its not as devastating, it can be, but it’s just not as bad.”- Coach/Teacher Mr. Jacobson
Sometimes you can partially place the blame, on both the consumer and the supplier.
“I think it’s Tik Toks fault, I think it’s hard for teenagers to resist social media” -Coach/Teacher Mr. Jacobson
“I think it definitely companies try to make it addictive so you spend more time but I think people spend time on their phone already which is like the culture” – sophomore Mckenzie Hall, said.
I’m going to have to agree with both our interviewees here, companies definitely purposely aim for their targeted audience, but like Mckenzie said, people are already addicted to their phones, they just need self control. This article’s purpose isn’t to persuade your opinion of the ban, but just to share insight on what others may think as well as its weight.
