If you are a fan of the opium label or even if you are a fan of music you knew about Playboi cartis album release last week. Charting 7th all time for album debuts, its safe to say that this album was anticipated. It has been five years since Carti released his last album, Whole Lotta Red. In this time the artist as pump faked the release of this album too many times to count. But now that we finally have this album its time to review!
Upon my first listen to this new project I thought that the mixing and mastering was bad and even the music just wasn’t for me. But after I listened a second and a third time I began to understand the music and grew to like it. My initial response and many others to this album was that it was not as good as it should be for an album that took five years. But I realized that this music wasn’t made for me or anyone else who wanted a copy paste Carti song. This album was playboi carti’s attempt at something new. Something that would allow him to grow as an artist. This is something that I am very fond of and I believe that it should be happening more in music. Artists tend to stick to their winning formula when they start winning and this prevents any interesting mainstream music. Playboi carti introduced a new sound to us through his opium label and is now expanding his sound and showing us where it can truly go with this new album. Songs like Crush and Like Weezy are completely unique tracks to his discography, yet they are two of the best songs off the album. Things like this go to show that experimenting and bringing new things to the table is interesting and creates engagement. This is why Carti is one of the most successful artists right now, this is why Music debu’s 7th all time, and this is why I will come back to listen to Carti frequently.
When looking back at my listens to this album I find that I am appreciative of the sound that Carti gave us. It’s a cool, engaging formula that he continues to expand on with each song. All this being said I don’t believe that this album is perfect, not even near perfect but it is good enough to favor a light 7 out of ten. If somehow you haven’t heard this project yet I would suggest a listen
