The court of the crimson king is a strange one. This album came right as Pink Floyd was hitting there prime and other dad rock bands on the scene were gaining traction. But king crimson didn’t want to sound normal. No, they wanted to push the prog rock sound to new heights. And with there 1969 release, the court of the crimson king, they did just that. This record explores the heights of dad rock and prog rock alike. Showing up even the likes of a prime Pink Floyd.
This albums influence for one has been something of legend even being sampled on various commercially successful hip-hop records such as Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy or MBDTF for short. It’s progressive technical drums pushed the boundaries of sound creating new routes for artists to go. A song that I believe highlights this is 21’st century schizoid man. This single was pivotal for the album because it was the first track and the lead single for the project. Its seven minute course takes us through clashing snares and stringy symbols. This track will show you that sound can go places you haven’t experienced, and I loved every minute of it.
Another key for this album was the era. Being released in the late 60’s this album was sort of a spark plug for early British rock artists. Influencing the likes of the Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin and The Doors. Having such a legacy is no small feat. there is no understating what this album in particular has done for music, its influence on rock influences hip-hop, pop and any other genre you can dream up.
At the end of the day, King crimsons the court of the crimson king is one of the greatest prog rock records ever made and I hold it in high regard. If you have not listened to this record yet then I highly recommend finding time because it is well worth it. I rate this album an A.
