I like asap rocky. Now normally this would be a good thing to say. But all I ever hear about him is that he makes some of the best music out. But now I just think he’s alright. There’s multiple reasons why I think this, His music is edgy for the sake of being edgy, and it isn’t pushing any boundaries. Don’t get me wrong though I think that Rocky makes decent music it just isn’t changing anything for me. The narratives that he rights about and the way his music sounds are just topics and sounds that have already seen there day.
My first reason that I think Asap rocky is mid is because I believe that his music is edgy for the sake of being edgy. What I mean by this is in his music he uses lots of vulgarity and sharper production to give an edgy aesthetic. This is all dandy but the substance of his music is not edgy or rough besides when he talks about gangs and violence. Another reason I say this is because it doesn’t seem to me that Rocky lives a rough lifestyle. This might just be me being cynical but I think that his music is partially fake. And while I believe this there is also an argument to be made that he is an entertainer and his lyrics don’t always have to be true in order to entertain me.
The second reason that I think asap rocky is mid is because his music isn’t pushing any boundaries. I say this because his sound is one that was popular in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Although he is popular now his music uses tropes from that era and production that would have been top tier for that time. But nowadays artists are experimenting with there sounds in new provocative or melodic ways while asap rocky has kept his sound the same and hasn’t contributed to a new wave of hip-hop that artists like Travis Scott or don’t Oliver have.
However some people might disagree with me because his highs are some of the best music to come out in the last decade. Songs like Houston old head and jukebox joints are both polarizing singles that you could catch me listening to any day of the week. But where I believe this argument falters is the fact that his catalog lacks depth. These songs might be daily listens for me but the rest of his catalog is so one noted that it is extremely hard to dive in and find real substance.
In conclusion, my perception of asap rocky is that he is slightly overrated. Although I do think that his high points are very high, most of his catalog is the same old mumbo jumbo that artists have been mindlessly producing for years. At the end of the day Asap rocky is a great artist but in His discography it is hard to find meaningful songs that aren’t already his most popular. I give Asap rocky a B-
