Blade Runner is conflicting. Every part of me wanted to like this movie. All the things that I had heard about this film were good. It consistently gets praise online for being one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. So, naturally, when I went to check this thing out, I was disappointed. I believe that I was disappointed for two reasons, the story is very convoluted, and the love interest is not enticing.
Like I said, the first reason that I didn’t like this film as much as I should’ve, was the story. The story of this movie follows a blade runner who has to track down and kill four faulty robots. While he does this, we are supposed to see the robots as villains, and that is clear, but I just have a hard time getting along with it. Along with this, the pacing was abysmal. It was impossible to track the story because of all the scenes that felt like they didn’t belong which ultimately threw the whole thing off.
The second reason I didn’t accept this film was the love interest. In this movie the protagonist falls in love with one of the robots, but the whole thing felt off. As an audience, we know that it shouldn’t be happening, but at the same time, that taboo doesn’t make me care because she is so one note and uninteresting. What I mean by this is that her character was just not fleshed out the way I believe she should have been.
At the end of the day, Blade Runner is a classic, whether I like it or not. While the plot and pacing are off and the love interest isn’t interesting, there is definitely a charm to this film brought solely through the cinematography. Despite all of the things I dislike, I would still suggest watching this just to get to Blade Runner 2049. I rate Blade Runner a B.
