India, on May 6, 2025, carried out a series of airstrikes throughout Pakistani territory as part of an operation called,“Operation Sindoor.” The nine targets were locations identified by India as terrorist camps, following an attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administration Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, including Hindu pilgrims. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-based militant groups.
The Indian Air Force made precision strikes against what it described as terrorist infrastructure within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Targets were believed to be associated with the likes of Jaish-e-Mohammed, blamed by India for the Pahalgam attack.
The attack was carried out by the Indian Air Force, following instructions of India. Pakistan’s armed forces confirmed the attacks, saying that six targets were hit and that eight individuals lost their lives.
The air attacks were conducted on May 6, 2025, against targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation was the most intense escalation between the two nuclear powers since the Balakot airstrike of 2019.
India stated the air strikes came as a reprisal of the Pahalgam strike and were used to destroy terrorism infrastructure and keep potential attacks away. The government reiterated its strong commitment to ensure the safety of its citizens and to act stringently against such threats.
The incident has increased tension between Pakistan and India, where both countries suspend diplomatic ties, trade, and airway privileges. The global community has also raised alarm on the possibility of further escalation and urged restraint by the two nations.
