As a kid, I always wondered what it would be like to have to survive in the wilderness. But I never thought of all the terrifying things that could happen, and the lengths you would need to go through to survive.
Yellowjackets is a psychological thriller with drama and a bit of comedy. It also is a coming-of-age story and emotional series. From the very first episode of the show, it hooks viewers with its eerie atmosphere and dual timeline of a 1996 plane crash and the aftermath of their survival twenty-five years later.
One of the best things about Yellowjackets is the way it has both insane suspense and amazing character development. The Yellowjackets are a high school girls’ soccer team whose plane crashes in the wilderness, therefore having to survive no matter the cost. What’s super cool about this show is how the timeline flashes forward to the present day, showing how the trauma of survival in the wild continues to haunt them. The way this show is done makes it have mystery and suspense. When I was watching I was making all these theories of what really happened to them in their time in the wilderness.
The cast of this show is amazing. Yellowjackets stars Melanie Lynskey (Shauna), Juliette Lewis (Natalie), Christina Ricci (Misty), and Tawny Cypress (Taissa) as the adult survivors, who do an amazing job at showing the trauma that they have all been through. The younger cast does a great job at showing the same character as their adult counterparts. Sophie Nélisse (Shauna), Sophie Thatcher (Natalie), Samantha Hanratty (Misty) and Jasmin Savoy Brown (Taissa). The younger cast is especially amazing to me because they have to show what it was like to go through what they went through.
What sets Yellowjackets apart is how they show how trauma affects people. Each character reacts differently to what they had to go through. My personal favorite thing about the show is the supernatural element. But the thing is, you don’t know if the supernatural things are actually happening or if it is all in their heads.
The music and the writing add so much to this show, adding suspense and super cool 90’s music (especially rock). I watched this show as it was coming out and I would always find myself waiting for Friday night because I desperately needed to know what was going to happen next.
