Baby driver is the best edited movie I have ever seen. Its blend of smooth cuts and song editing is so subtle yet beautiful it is hard to look away. Besides the editing the acting in this movie is top tier. This movie is great for many reasons, but today I want to talk about the editing and acting.
The first thing I wanted to talk about with this movie is the editing. Its achievement with its editing can be reflected by its multiple awards. This movie won critics choice award for editing and the BAFTA editing award. The way that this movie goes about its upbeat musical editing is second to none. The best example of this would be the opening scene. On this scene we find our protagonist Baby at the drivers seat of a high stakes getaway bank robbery. Paired with the upbeat rock and roll tune of, The Jon Spencer Blues exploration’s, Bellbottoms. This scene allows us to explore the character without dialogue through the editing. It shows us how baby is a dynamic driver and a quirky character with a calm cool collected attitude.
The second thing that I wanted to talk about with this movie is the way that the actors portray their roles. Each actor took on their role with an absolute understanding. Ansel Elgort as Baby gave a riveting performance even without the most dialogue and the supporting actors like John Hamm and lily James just understood there roles. Even though the dialogue in this film was not top tier the performances just set this film apart. It was in some ways the quickest two hours I’ve ever experienced. The way that I was sucked in to this world and wanted to keep coming back for more was not something I expected and I can pay this due to the acting.
However, Some people might disagree with me about this movie because of the dialogue. At times the dialogue in this movie seems uninspired and follows the tropes o a crime drama to thoroughly. Certain characters in this movie are written in such a way that we as an audience understand who they are but we don’t know what they have to offer. With this style of dialogue at times I don’t know how to feel about a character in certain scenarios and other characters make it so painfully obvious what they are doing or are supposed to be doing that It leaves me disinterested. But with this film disinterest is not a factor due to the other factors such as editing and acting. Which is why I believe that this movie is so good.
At the end of the day Baby driver is one of the greatest masterpieces in editing. Although this film sometimes lacks substance through dialogue it will always make it back up to you through the performances, music, editing and action. I give baby driver an A.
