Recently, both the house and senate voted to reopen the government. After negotiations, the Republicans were able to get seven Democrats and one independent to vote in favor of reopening the government in the Senate. This was very upsetting for the majority of the Democratic Party, because the deal included getting rid of ACA (Affordable Care Act) subsidies. Then, the house voted to reopen the government, which was also successful.
This was the longest government shutdown in history. After 43 days of the government shutdown, lots of federal workers and government employees were affected.
“I think the fact that it took so long to reopen the government really negatively affected people’s lives, rather in the military, or as a federal worker,” said senior Ryan Cornejo.
Most people are happy it’s over, but do not realize that it will shut down again. The resolution that reopened the government will only fund the government until January 30th, leading to another shutdown.
“It’s going to shut down again, so it’s childish we couldn’t fully end the shutdown. Real Americans suffer, but when it affects airlines, we must reopen the government. They need to act like adults and do what they were hired to do,” said junior Lila Burgoyne.
Here’s what will happen: Those with SNAP and food benefits will have those benefits funded until September of 2026.
Those on ACA subsidies will see a double to triple increase in cost on their insurance. (Kaiser Family Foundation)
The senators who got their phone calls subpoenaed now have the right to sue the government for at least $500,000 or more after the Special Counsel Jack Smith’s January 6th investigation.
In the end, the government is open again, but this deal only buys little time. Lawmakers will now have until January 30th to figure it out. If they don’t, the country could go back to how it was just a few weeks ago.
