The Utah Mammoths in only their second season of being a NHL team, have made it into the first round of the playoffs. They are also only the 3rd team in 45 years to do that. Beating almost all expectations, especially when you have the Jazz as a basketball team in the same state.
The NHL playoffs are best out of seven and the Mammoths needed to win game 6. Unfortunately they got destroyed by the Golden Knights 5 -1 despite a very close and intense game series of 4 -2, featuring two overtime games. One of them a double overtime game and both games resulting in a 5 – 4 Mammoth loss.
Despite the crushing loss, Utah fans have much reason to celebrate. In only 2 years of being an NHL team the Mammoths have already made it to the post season and also lost to a very prestigious team whose players have all competed in a Stanley Cup game. Even though the Mammoths lost, they showed much promise for the future.
This team is young but is already very important to the city. It’s been four years since a pro Utah team has made it to the playoffs and that was the Jazz getting demolished by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round. Since then, Utah has been in a drought, thanks to the Jazz, and many fans have become discouraged. The Mammoths sudden surge of potential for success in the post season has brought many Utahns interested into, not only the team, but the sport of Hockey as a whole.
All eyes are on the Mammoths for the foreseeable, and expectations and hopes are high. But either way, the Mammoths, despite a crushing loss, have already brought hope to many Utahns.
