In the past 45 years, the population of Farmington has grown from 5,000 to almost 25,000. A population growing this fast has some unintended consequences such as overcrowding, housing shortages, and overloaded public schools.
We have already seen house prices skyrocket as a result of a shortage of housing and high desire to live here, with the average house price approaching 700,000 dollars, 200,000 dollars over the national average.
The population will continue to increase faster and faster. As it grows, more housing is necessary, the common solution being townhomes. We’re seeing multiple large developments with dozens of townhomes, especially near Station Park.
When talking to students, the most common concern, although stated in various ways, was over the possibility of Farmington High School becoming overcrowded.
Our school was only built 8 years ago and there are already concerns of overcrowding. We realize measures must be taken to ensure there is space for all students in the Davis School District, examples being the addition of a three-story Career and Technology Education (CTE) building to Bountiful High School, and renovations to Layton High School, where they are adding 14 new classrooms for performing arts and science.
These expansions aren’t only for high school. Many families with young children have moved into Farmington and this has led to the rebuilding of Bountiful Elementary, opening Island View Elementary, and building Horizon Junior High.
Students at Farmington High reported that the elementary schools handle crowding much better, and that their siblings had never complained about the school not having enough room.
As people continue to move into Farmington, we have to remain proactive. If we don’t, house prices will continue to skyrocket and students will have to travel to schools in other districts.
