School is back up and running which means that it’s time for another school musical! This year, The SpongeBob Musical is coming to Farmington High School. With auditions complete and cast lists posted, preparation is underway for the upcoming performances, the first being on November 15, 2024. In this article, we will share a little bit more about the show and people behind it. “I’m ready!” Are you?
Stephen Hillenburg’s SpongeBob SquarePants, an animated series, has been a big hit ever since it first aired on July 17, 1999. With great reviews and such high popularity, it comes as no surprise that the beloved sea sponge took to the stage in a big way! The musical is set in the undersea town, Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob and his friends, such as Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward, and many more, live. All is well until the citizens of Bikini Bottom get current of their inevitable doom. It is in this time of despair that protagonist SpongeBob and his contagious optimism must rise to the occasion to try and save the day.
Some of the students agree that they were at first surprised once the musical was announced, but that didn’t stop them from putting their all into the auditions and coming to love the show.
Junior Macy Knapp agrees saying, “I’ll take any performing experience I can get to build up my resume! It’s also a super fun show! Like a lot of people, I wasn’t allowed to watch SpongeBob as a kid, so I was a little apprehensive at first. But I eventually came to enjoy the music and the originality of the show.”
Though the majority agree that they enjoy the show, there are still challenges they must overcome in order to give a great performance. Some of the biggest challenges at the moment seem to be memorization, blocking, getting down the dances, and figuring out how to fully get into character.
Despite these difficulties, Junior Jack Dunford says, “Everyone’s working hard and it’s coming together nicely.”
From the creativity of the show and the talent and dedication of the actors, it seems as though this is definitely a performance to look forward to!
Senior Lexi Alsop further explains why Farmington High’s production of SpongeBob SquarePants is one to watch. She says, “How funny this show is alone, I think, is a reason to come! I just think this show is also deeper than people are thinking it is. There is a lot of wanting to feel like you belong, and I think that is so important for so many people! So yes, come watch. It’s a super funny and fun show!”
