Everyone knows the famous phrase, “A dog is a man’s best friend”. We all know it, we have all heard it, but is it in fact true? Or is it really just a saying that has been said for years? At Farmington High we wanted to investigate just that. So we went out to talk and interview some students, to hear about their thoughts on this phrase, what they think is true, or not true!
“I have a dog, I’ll say she’s my built-in best friend. She’s always right where I am and for the term ‘A dog is a man’s best friend’ i do totally agree with it. I couldn’t describe me and my dog’s friendship in a better way” Sophomore Emerson Lock said.
Not in every case, does a best friend have to be a human, it can be as simple as a tiny gold fish, that for some means the absolute world. A best friend is someone or something that is always by you no matter what! They can sense when something is wrong, they are prepared to stand up for you and mostly the deep bond within the two, such as an animal and their owner.
“A dog is really a man’s best friend. I see my dog as almost my life long partner, not just as my pet or animal. My dog’s name is Leah, I just love her!” Sophomore Weston Dennis said.
Now we can confirm from students at Farmington high that a dog really is man’s best friend! Dogs fill a space in our human hearts that we didn’t know we actually needed, they’re always up for a good playtime, cuddles and some good ol’ affection!
The term “A dog is a man’s best friend” originated from King Frederick ll Of Prussia. He referred to his Italian greyhound dog, “his best friend”. From this, the phrase gained a ton of popularity in the 18th century and has been used ever since to represent the relationship between a dog and a man. Fun fact, the first time the term was ever used was in 1821, in a poem by C.S. Winkle.
The phrase has a deeper meaning. It’s about the loyalty and companionship that owners and pets have with one another. It’s the beautiful bond that is created between two species, the challenges we win with them and the great memories that are made each day with the companionship of a pet! A dog is a great animal to have!
