In elementary school, you always saw every kid dressing up for spirit weeks. But in high school, you don’t seem to see that anymore. Of course, some people still dress up, but why don’t you see the majority participating?
One major reason is social pressure. If the themes aren’t appealing to them, many students don’t want to risk being the only one dressed up. They would rather play it safe. Social media also plays a big role in this. People are constantly taking pictures and videos. Some students feel self-conscious about wearing something outside of their comfort zone. And they don’t want that to be spread around.
Junior, Nixon Salazar said, “It feels weird to dress up for it. Nobody does it and I’ll just look stupid.”
Another factor is lack of time and accessibility. Students are already juggling jobs, extracurriculars, homework, and other issues at home. Planning new outfits is just another responsibility, and it can be overwhelming. Especially if it involves wearing things they don’t already own. Not everyone is able to spend money on specific clothing items that they will wear once and never touch again.
Students also like being able to dress up in their own style, showing off their wardrobe. Farmington High School is known for its students having great fashion taste. Looking around the halls, you see all sorts of different styles. So, students don’t want to compromise their fashion image for a school spirit week.
Junior, India Mann said, “I can’t wear pajamas to school because I have to mog everyone.”
India supports the fact that students like to show off their fashion sense. It gives them confidence and helps them express themselves.
Still, many students enjoy dressing for spirit week, it can make school fun again. With more student input and themes that interest them, participation could rise.
