As students around the school are required to take MAPS and complete their assignments for that class. Teachers and especially students have begun to wonder if these assignments are helping or hurting their learning and grades. Recently, this question has gained a lot of attention around the school to look for ways to better support the students with their academic progress. Many students say MAPS already takes up time in their schedules, so adding assignments has created mixed feelings about whether this class is doing what it is supposed to.
Junior, Monroe Tibbs said, “It just adds more stress for a class that shouldn’t add more stress.”
Monroe explains that the assignments in MAPS are not helping her in the way they are intended to help. In fact, they are adding more stress onto the stress she already has from other classes assignments. This points out a big problem, if these assignments are adding more pressure to students instead of helping them stay organized and prepared then it could be an issue for overall academic improvement.
Junior, Serah Cook said,” MAPS shouldn’t have assignment.”
Serah agrees with Monroe’s statement and also thinks that MAPS should not have assignments. Through both Serah and Monroe we can see that many students agree with their statements and think that MAPS shouldn’t include extra work. However, not all students feel this way, and some students do find these assignments helpful in their school life.
Sophomore, Cassie Willoughby said, “I think that MAPS should have assignments because they help keep you on track and give you a list of things you need to do.”
Cassie helps us understand the other side of the argument, these assignments do help some students to stay on track and organized. In her view, MAPS assignments work as reminders and help her create good habits.
As this debate continues, both sides highlight important points on how MAPS affects students. This shows that even though this class aims to support everyone, different students need different approaches to benefit from it.
