With the New Year that just started, it’s always a tradition to make new goals or habits. Some of these habits can simply be repeated actions we add to our daily routine or a long term goal set for the year.
Good habits are often the key to success, but they don’t have to be life-changing overnight. Habits are usually small actions that slowly shape who we become and how we act. Whether it’s how we manage our time, take care of our health, or treat others, having good habits can make our lives easier and more productive.
One of the biggest most important parts of developing habits is consistency. It takes time and a positive mindset to develop a good habit. When something becomes a habit, it requires less effort and motivation in regards to your dedication.
Habits can also be beneficial as they can reduce stress and improve performance without requiring extra time.
“It can make you calm down a lot more and you don’t feel stressed about whatever is going on. Having a good habit is gonna help the negative effect go away,” says sophomore Hadley Leavitt.
Good habits also help build self-discipline.
“Habits help build a better personality for yourself,” says sophomore Ryon Bingham.
Self-discipline isn’t something you’re born with. It’s developed through habits. Waking up at the same time each morning, finishing homework before scrolling, or putting in effort even when you don’t feel like it, are all examples of self-discipline established through constructive habits. Over time, these choices make it easier to stay focused and responsible.
Simple routines like drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, and moving our body each day can improve our energy and mood throughout the day. Many teens feel constantly tired, not necessarily because they’re lazy, but because their habits work against them. A regular sleep schedule and balanced routine can make a noticeable difference in both physical and mental health.
Developing good habits doesn’t mean you have to be perfect from the start. Usually, the best way to build habits is to start small. Trying to change everything at once is very difficult and can often lead to burnout. Instead, focusing on one habit at a time can lead to long-term success. Once one habit sticks, developing another habit becomes easier.
Having good habits helps shape our future more than big, one-time decisions. The small, daily choices that we decide to make add up over time. By developing positive habits now, students set themselves up for success not only in school, but in life beyond it.
