Getting your drivers license is a huge part of teen life. Freedoms like late night drives, hanging out with friends, and that feeling of independence are very common, but in 2026, that comes with a cost.
As of early April, the average price of diesel fuel in Utah is $5.48, while the average mid-grade gas price is $4.44. That is more than double the average price exactly six years ago. Cars are getting more and more expensive to fill up
“It used to be about $40 to fill up my car, and now it’s almost $60 every time,” said senior Logan Fry.
Some students’ habits haven’t changed at all, it is common to see parents pay for their kid’s gas while they’re still at Farmington High School, though others have had to make conscious decisions.
When gas prices rise, students start to rethink how often they drive, where they go, and if having a car is worth it at all. Most students with part-time jobs often find the majority of their paycheck goes straight to gas.
The average part-time working student makes from $13- $18 per hour, and while the average cost to fill a standard size tank of gas is around $60-$65, students are using around four hours, just for gas.
“Last week, my paycheck was $260, but it was $110 to fill my truck,” said junior Stein Embley.
Because of the financial consequences of driving, many students feel restricted.
“Since gas prices have shot up, I haven’t been going on late night drives for fun anymore. I can’t afford it anymore,” said senior Isaac Waldron.
While driving still represents an independent freedom for most students, rising gas prices are causing them to think twice before going somewhere, or just for a drive.
