The year was 2019, the top song on billboards was “Old Town Road”, and the number three ranked high school football player in the “Tar Heel State” of North Carolina was Drake Maye.
Coming from a family of athletes -all three of his older brothers and father playing sports at the collegiate level -there was a lot of pressure on young Drake Maye. His junior year in high school, Maye threw for a historic 50 touchdowns with a 71% completion rate, earning him a four-star rating and making him the 57th ranked player in the nation.
Sadly, due to covid, his senior season was cancelled, but he went on to play at UNC in 2021 and earned the number one spot his sophomore year. Over the next two years, he threw 7,929 yards, 62 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. These two years made him one of the most popular quarterbacks in college football among young fans.
“[Drake Maye] could read any defense,” senior Skyler Petersen said.
NFL scouts also saw this high IQ, perfect frame quarterback and put him very high on their draft boards, allowing him to go as #3 pick to the New England Patriots in the quarterback-filled 2024 NFL draft. His rookie season, Drake had the worst rated wide receiver room and worst rated offensive line in the NFL and still threw a respectable 2,200 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Despite still having a pitiful supporting cast offensively, Drake Maye has carried this team to an 8-2 record with 2,500 yards, 19 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions through ten games. This incredible statistical jump has made him one of the greatest sophomore breakouts of NFL history. NFL fans believe in this young man who is now the number two ranked MVP contender.
“Drake ‘Drake Maye’ Maye is all you need to know,” said junior, Anderson Davis.
