Thanks to a fantastic move that would shock both NFL fans and Colts fans, the addition of Daniel Jones lead the Colts into being considered top playoff contenders and even Superbowl competitive. Both are things that the Colts have not been considered for at least the past five years, but this year was looking like a redemption year for the Colts. It seemed a sure thing that the Colts would make the playoffs.
Unfortunately, after the Colts bye week in week 11, they started a three game losing streak, bumping them down to third in their division. The Colts need to win every game, or at least most of their games, to comfortably be in the playoffs, but that is going to be very hard. This proves a great challenge because the teams they play the rest of the year are all playoff competitors. Not only that, but hard soon felt impossible for the Colts.
In the first quarter of the Colts most recent game against the Jaguars, Daniel Jones, the Colts starting QB, tore his Achilles in a non-contact injury. Tearing his Achilles tendon will force Jones to the bench for the rest of the season, a huge impact on the Colts team at arguably the worst time of the season. To make things worse, the next day, the back up QB, Riley Leonard, reported a knee injury, making him questionable for the upcoming game.
So, in a shocking and unprecedented move, the Colts signed their future Hall-of-Famer, arguably one of the best QBs the Colts ever had, Phillip Rivers to the practice squad. Rivers being signed to the practice squad means that he could possibly be elevated and the starter for the Colts upcoming game this Sunday. The last time the Colts went to the playoffs was also the last time that Phillip Rivers played in 2020. Rivers is five years removed from the sport, but because of his long, successful career history, there is still hope for Colt’s fans.
