Last weekend was the second round of the AMA Supercross championship in San Diego, CA. Eli Tomac goes back-to-back to open 2026 Monster Energy Supercross season, and defending western divisional champion Haiden Deegan secured the 250SMX win
The 450 main started with Hunter Lawrence leading the holeshot, with Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac following closely behind. Chase Sexton started off poorly as he hit the gate to start, putting him at the very rear of the lineup. As Sexton made his way through, he came into contact with the defending champion Cooper Webb, causing him to crash. Webb recovered and secured eighth place. Sexton would go on to finish just off the podium in fourth place.
The race quickly turned into a three-way fight for first place between Roczen, Tomac, and Lawrence. Through the first couple of laps, Lawrence led the way, fractions of a second ahead. By lap 10, Roczen pulled ahead and continued to hold the first-place position for another 5 laps. However, by lap 16, Tomac took the lead and was able to hold until the end of the race, followed by Lawrence in second, and Roczen third.
This marks Eli Tomac’s 55th career win, pushing him further ahead in second place wins list for all time 450SX, five wins ahead of James Stewart. Tomac still has a long way to go to catch the all time king of supercross Jeremy McGrath, with 72 450SX wins.
It was a controversial first win for Haiden Deegan in the 250SMX class. Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha’s Max Anstie had the holeshot, and led the race alongside his teammate Deegan just behind him. Deegan went into Anstie in one of the corners, and Anstie went down hard, but eventually got back for a sixth place win. Deegan finished practically unchallenged, winning by a 7.6 second margin ahead of McAdoo, who had finished last at Anaheim.
