In the rematch of Super Bowl 49, the Seahawks dominated the Patriots, 29 – 13, in a solid defensive victory. The Patriots were held to less than 80 yards rushing, had three costly turnovers, and were sacked six times, nearly tying the record for most sacks in Super Bowl history.
The saying, “Defense wins championships,” coined by Paul Bryant, was definitely true in this Super Bowl as the Seahawks had about the same amount of total offensive yards and a worse pass completion attempt percentage compared to the Patriots. The Seahawks also relied heavily on kicking field goals and had their first touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks’ offense was carried by Kenneth Walker’s fantastic performance of 135 yards rushing, the 8th most yards rushing in a Superbowl. Walker also had an average of five yards per rush attempt and was the first running back in 28 years to win Super Bowl MVP.
On the other side, it seemed that Drake Maye and his offense could not find answers until it was too late. With 12:56 left in the game, Maye threw his two best throws to Mack Hollins, one resulting in a touchdown. On the following drive, however, the Patriots’ hopes for a comeback were destroyed with 8:49 left in the game when Maye ended up throwing a pick to Julian Love. Later, the Patriots would get another touchdown, but by that point, the game was already out of reach and their fate was sealed.
