More recently, gas stations have become more than just a quick stop for fuel and to buy a pack of gum. Now they have become a popular hangout spot for teens and young adults.
Somehow, a late-night or after school gas station run has become a fun and exciting activity.
What makes this ordinary stop suddenly so hyped?
The main part of the hype is just to be able to get out and enjoy some freedom. For teens, when they get their license, or they have a friend who can drive, driving to a gas station expresses a feeling of independence in a way that we haven’t experienced yet.
Gas stations are cheap, simple, and don’t require you to go out of your way for a simple activity you can enjoy with friends.
You just go. Walk in. Look through the aisles. Debated on what snacks to get like it’s an important life decision.
“There is a very good selection of treats and snacks to get when I have a snack itch.” Sophomore Jake Kajma said.
Teens love the snack selection. They carry a variety of chips and candy to viral drinks and limited-edition flavors. You’ll find energy drinks, slushies, and a good selection of hot food.
Big stops like Maverik helped turn convenience stores into snack destinations, while travel stops like Buc-ee’s made it cool to treat your pit stop with a full-on experience.
Stops like those with a place that sells 50 flavors of soda and fresh pastries make it feel less “basic”.
Drinks are very common to make at a gas station.
“I like to make the Berry Bad Doctor from Fiiz at Maverik because it’s cheaper and I can make it personalized.” Sophomore Brynley Harrison said.
Social media adds to the hype. People post hauls of their favorite drinks, rate snacks in their cars, or make random late-night runs look aesthetically pleasing.
It’s just a fun get-a-way that is a quick adventure with friends while music is playing, windows are down, and you’re laughing over which candy is more elite.
Gas station hype might sound random, but it makes sense. It’s affordable, easy, and social. In a world where almost everything is scheduled and expensive, the best memories can simply start in a snack aisle.
