Social media is a big part of everyone’s daily life in our world today. It’s how we connect with one another, and that can both have some ups and down along with it. Social media has revolutionized over decades, we share information, connect, and lastly how we perceive our world. As said, social media can give great opportunities in society, but it does come with its challenges, which have caused impacts.
We went around to talk to students at Farmington high, about what they think social media does to our society today!
“I think social media has impacted how we choose to see others, if we hear something or see something on our phones, we just automatically make up this kind of reputation about a person, from simply something that could be false information too.” Sophomore Norah Forsberg said.
False information or so-called “fake news” have a big say in how we get significant information both around the world but also our personal circles. That can have huge consequences later on, but social media can be a dangerous place, but we do also have to look at what social media has taught us till this day.
Social media can be a way for marginalized groups of people to get a voice through media platforms. Social media also provides us with diverse topics, perspectives around the world, online learning courses on stuff we want to get better at, and lastly the connection you can find through a simple message.
“Social media does have its negative effects, everything does, but I feel like social media can help with getting new connections, forming friendships, where you magically can bond over the phone.” Sophomore Aria Christiansen said.
Anyway, social media has become an incredible tool worldwide, both for groups of people who are vulnerable, businesses, organizations, and friendships. With social media already being one of our biggest essential tools in life, we learn more and more each and every day, such as also being a way to help people with difficult challenges and give the support they are looking for. Social media has impacted our society, but it depends on how we decide to use it, one way or another. Social media can be a great way to grow and learn about both yourself, others and the world, but do remember that it does have its side effects.
