Artificial intelligence has become a part of everyday student life. From homework help to AI generated assignments, students can finish their work quicker, but as students become more dependent on AI, the negative effects are getting hard to ignore.
While AI can be useful in limited ways, the use of it is undermining learning, creativity, and responsibility. One of the most significant issues is the lack of critical thinking skills. Learning is supposed to come up with challenges; that’s what helps you grow as a student. Over time, this dependence can weaken a student’s ability to think critically and independently.
AI also encourages academic dishonesty, even when students do not intend to cheat. AI tools instantly give answers, blurring the line between plagiarism and studying. Many students copy and paste answers from AI chatbots without even understanding it. This defeats the purpose of education all together.
“I don’t like to use AI because I feel bad. It’s like cheating.” Junior Mia Garcia said.
Mia demonstrates academic honesty, but many students do not value that.
AI also negatively impacts students’ writing skills. Writing develops thought and self-expression. When AI writes for students, they aren’t able to articulate ideas on their own. In settings like college applications or real-world communication when AI is not available, they may struggle.
“I don’t like to use AI. It makes things a lot easier, but it also makes me feel like I don’t understand the class.” Junior Francesca Garate says.
The overuse of AI contributes to increased disengagement. As Francesca stated, when assignments feel optional because a bot can do it for them in seconds, students are often less invested in their classes. This reduces motivation and feelings of accomplishment. Not only are these qualities essential for academic success, but also for personal growth.
Additionally, AI raises concerns about long-term dependence. If students rely on a machine to think for them, they could enter adulthood without the skill needed to navigate through life. Education is meant to prepare kids for the future, but when they don’t put in the work, it can’t.
Although AI can be a very useful resource, without clear boundaries, it can become a major problem. To keep the integrity of learning, students need to prioritize their education instead of just trying to get things done as fast as possible.
