On February 22nd, 2026, the U.S. Men’s Hockey team won gold for the first time since 1980.
Jack Hughes, a player for the New Jersey Devils, scored the winning goal in overtime assisted by Zach Werenski and Connor Hellebuyck. But not after losing his front tooth with a high stick from Sam Bennett.
“I woke up early because my mom made pancakes and we were all on our toes. Then Jack Hughes scored it in overtime, and it was beautiful we all went crazy” Senior Treyton Arnold said.
These very passionate words from Treyton reflect the stress, excitement, and anticipation many fans were feeling during the game. After a 46-year drought, fans were absolutely ecstatic to see this win.
This year’s team was rich with talent and dedication, leading to their fantastic win.
Each team is composed of 14 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 3 goalies including 1 captain and 2 assistant captains. The team captain for team U.S.A was Auston Matthews with Charlie McAvoy and Matthew Tkachuk as the assistant captains.
After the game, President Trump called the team and invited them to his State of the Union address. He joked about having to invite the women’s team.
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that” said Trump.
Several players were seen laughing at the joke, upsetting many fans. On Tuesday, Jack and Quinn Hughes were asked about the situation. They explained that it did not reflect the team’s views, they had a good relationship with the women’s team and respected them all.
Aside from this controversy, the U.S. is proud to have won two gold medals in hockey this year. The teams’ hard work and dedication really paid off. Making the whole nation proud.
