With the NFL season over this season has been a great example of the impacts that coaches have on a team. This year a shocking nine coaches have been fired from their teams and many analysts and fans argue that there should be more fired.
Of the nine coaches fired only 5 of them had losing records and the other 4 had winning records, accolades, and good reputations around the league as good coaches. The firings of Jonathan Gannon, Brian Callahan, Brian Daboll, Kevin Stefanski, Mike McDaniel, Raheem Morris, and Pete Carroll were not a big surprise to most.
Most of these coaches’ teams never showed any real potential this season, with the exception to Raheem Morris, the Falcons, and Brian Daboll, the Giants.
The Falcons had a 8-9 record, which is not a terrible record especially considering that they lost their starting QB. On top of that the team looked sharp and showed potential towards the later half of the season beating the LA Rams who ended up making it to the NFC championship.
The Giants had a horrible 4 – 13 record, but they lost 5 games when they had a lead in the 4th quarter. Which is an embarrassing stat but also shows that they showed a lot of potential and dominance earlier in the game. They also lost their star WR, running back, and had many things happening QB wise and weren’t consistent with who was the QB. So the Giants with successful coach John Harbaugh, might be much better next season.
Whilst these coaches were disappointments many others took their chance and saved teams from being forgotten and humiliated. For Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, and Liam Coen this was their first year coaching their team, but they all managed to make it to the playoffs, even though just the year before none of their teams were close to making the playoffs. Turning their teams from irrelevant to competitors and the teams to beat.
